Hatay is a city, rich in historical and touristic places. UNESCO declared it a Gastronomy City in 2017 and its star is gradually glowing now. Like its Kurtuluş Street, known as the world's first illuminated street. Hatay has many other important firsts in history, such as the use of the word "Christian" for the first time in history, being the world's third largest province during

Roman period and hosting the first mosque in Anatolia.

Antioch In 300 BC, the city of Antiochus, (the father of Nikator the first), was one of the centers of Olympics,

which started in 195. The city is known as "The City of Olympics" and where the world's most spectacular Olympic games were held.

Archaeological excavations suggest that the region's historic past is dating back to the early ages of BC. The region was under the domination of the Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Macedonians respectively. Starting from the fourth century Ottomans ruled the city until the First World War.

The Independent Hatay State was established in 1938 with the intervention of the Turkish Government on the work carried out for the definition of independence of France to Syria after the War of Independence in Hatay, a city that Atatürk characterized as a personal interest. Hatay State, surviving 10 months and 21 days, joined Turkey on June 23, 1939.

There are also confusions about the exact name of the city here. Is it Hatay or Antakya? Actually, both are used, Hatay is generally accepted as the name of the province, while Antakya is the name of the central district of Hatay.
